Understanding Social Enterprise Awareness Day

Target audience – Pupils from Primary 5, 6 and 7 and pupils from S1, 2 and 3

Kilchuimen Academy hosted their ‘Kilchuimen Social Enterprise Day’ with the lovely people from Social Enterprise Academy (Sandra Ewen MBE, Rachel Farmer & Lee McGrath) on Thursday, 15th March 2018. DYW West Highland helped to coordinate local businesses to attend, so that pupils could have the opportunity to learn from their advice – a bit like speed business networking. The advice shared by the businesses is to help with their up-and-coming social enterprise project.

Purpose

The purpose of the day was to help the young people understand what social enterprise is by sharing inspirational stories and getting them to explore how they can set up a school based social enterprise business that has a social purpose at its heart. The young people met with members of the Social Enterprise Academy Team and other local business people. The session was led by Lee McGrath, Social Entrepreneur and a Social Enterprise Academy Tutor. Lee is General Manager of ReBOOT, a computer recycling social enterprise based in Moray. He has been working with schools in the Highlands and Islands for three years. The day was finished off with some Continuing Professional Development for teachers and partners.
