Maritime Skills Course Talk at Portree High School

As West Highland College is one of DYW West Highland’s main partners, we were delighted when the college’s Maritime Skills course instructor, Shaun Escott agreed to come to Portree High School to deliver an informative presentation about the course and associated careers.

Courses and Careers

As the Maritime Skills course usually runs in Mallaig, this was a great opportunity for Portree High School pupils to find out more information about this. Representative, Shaun Escott told pupils in detail about the course as well as salaries, qualifications and maritime careers. It was emphasised that a career in the maritime sector has more to offer than just skipper type work as young people can also work in hospitality, engineering or gain experience as a deck hand. As like many other work sectors, there are opportunities for everyone and so industry talks such as these are good for tackling stereotypical ideas regarding the type of work available.

Excellent Reception

We are delighted to report that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the visit and as a result,  lots of questions were put to the college representatives about the course.

Thanks goes to West Highland College’s Maritime Skills department for taking the time to come to Portree High School!
