Mallaig High School: Mini Careers Event

Mallaig High School recently ran a fabulous mini careers event for S1s and S2s. DYW West Highland were delighted to help coordinate a variety of employers to come and share their professional expertise with a very curious, engaged and ambitious group of young people.

The format consisted of a carousel of youngsters (groups of two or three) visiting each expert and interviewing them for five minutes about their work. The outcome of the event was to encourage the pupils to increase their social confidence and to also help provide that lightbulb moment that inspires a young person to follow their dream career.

“I think when I am older I’d like to pursue a career in engineering.”

Commenting on the day, Clyde Wallace, a pupil at Mallaig High School, said: “The Careers Day on Friday the 26th of January was really inspiring, and I now know what I might want to be when I am older. We met lots of people with very different jobs– from RAF technicians to hotel owners and they all had lots of things to share. Personally, my favourite was Kenny who was a nuclear submarine engineer because I like the idea of it. I think when I am older I’d like to pursue a career in engineering.”

“I am keen to join the Fire Service but because of this event I will now seriously consider joining the RAF as a firefighter.”

Another pupil, Brogan Dempster, added: “The Careers event was very interesting and informative. We met a variety of people representing a range of very different career backgrounds– from Social Work to the RAF. The representatives had a lot to tell us– not just about the jobs they are in but about what led them to this career. They also shared interesting stories and personal incidents. It has certainly helped me think about my career. I am keen to join the Fire Service but because of this event I will now seriously consider joining the RAF as a firefighter.”

A massive thank you to the wonderful employers who attended: Rolls-Royce, RAF, NHS, West Highland College, The Underwater Centre, West Highland Hotel, Mallaig Pool & Leisure Centre, Mallaig Heritage Centre and The MacKintosh Centre.
