Lochaber Sea Cadets seek Volunteers and Cadets!

Lochaber Sea Cadets is a nautical charity that are currently recruiting for volunteers and future cadets! This opportunity is fantastic for young people as the charity gives them the chance to personally grow and develop new skills through working together in teams and in an environment where they can find new confidence and inspiration.

Something for Everyone

Through the charity, young people of all ages have the chance to participate in activities such as sailing, boating, windsurfing and kayaking, to name but a few, as well as land-based activities like football, rock climbing and orienteering, with some also choosing to study cooking and marine engineering at the same time. Whilst learning valuable life skills, young people also have lots of fun as the charity has a band and several large yachts, including a £5 million, 3-masted brig which cadets and volunteers learn to sail.

Qualifications and Possible Employment Opportunities

After their time as a cadet, it is quite often the case that young people go on to join the Royal Navy or Marines but the charity are by no means a recruitment tool for them, but the skills learned can be useful for this type of career.  The opportunity to gain useful qualifications can also mean that members can apply for jobs in medicine, engineering, catering and meteorology, through choosing to study any of the following, offered qualifications:

BTEC Level 1 & Level 2 in Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship
• BTEC in Music
• Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
• First Aid with St John’s Ambulance
• SQA Qualification in Leadership

All transferable skills learned are highly useful for members to thrive and reach their full potential in a workplace environment after education as employers highly value employees who possess teamworking, leadership, forward planning, excellent communication and problem solving qualities.  Participating in extra curricular activities outside school and volunteering for a charity also looks good on a young person’s CV and can be useful for making an individual stand out when applying for university, college, jobs or apprenticeships.
