Lochaber High Pupil Enjoys Work Experience at the Local Hairdressers

As meaningful* work experience opportunities are widely promoted in all our schools in the Lochaber, Skye and Wester Ross regions, we were delighted when S5 Lochaber High School pupil, Tegan Dennison applied for work experience through Hi-Hope at a local hairdressing salon, Capelli Studio to give her an insight into working in the industry. Tegan, very kindly shared her story with us:

What company did you choose for work experience? Why there?

‘My name is Tegan and I am in 5th year. My favourite subjects are Home Economics and RMPS.’

‘I chose to do work experience at Capelli Studio, as in the future I would like to be a hairdresser.’

What did you learn during your work experience placement?

‘While I’m at Capelli’s I do things such as making teas and coffees and I wash the dishes and the brushes. I also sweep up and help clean up and I’ve also got to help wash a couple of people’s hair and take out someone’s rollers. While I’ve been at Capelli’s I have started being less shy and speak to a lot more people now.’

Did you enjoy the placement?

‘I really enjoy doing work experience at Capelli’s and I really enjoy all of the stuff I do there, so I don’t really have a favourite bit.’

Has your work experience placement at the company made you keen to work in this industry/ sector?

‘After school, I would go to college in Glasgow and after that hopefully find a job in the hairdressing industry.’

What advice would you give to other high school students wanting to go on work experience?

‘I would encourage other students to speak to a teacher about opportunities and then they could help them see if it was on the Hi-Hope website. I would recommend work placements to young people because it shows you what it would be like working in that industry and to see if you do actually enjoy it and if it’s something you would like to do in the future. I have really enjoyed my experience so far.’

*Meaningful work experience: a minimum of two days in a preferred route or occupation
