Highland Motors: Helping to Inspire Local Young Minds
Support from employers is invaluable to retaining young talent in the area, and it can help provide that light bulb moment that encourages a young person into seeking a career that they are genuinely interested in.
An eager group of S4 Pupils from Portree High School were delighted to have recently received a visit from Stephen Smith, a Director from Highland Motors.
Highland Motors is a locally owned Garage and MOT Centre based in Borve, just outside Portree on the Isle of Skye. Highland Motors pride themselves on having excellent customer service and will always try to go that extra mile to help, which is key to their successful business.
As a Vauxhall Authorised Repairer they have committed to a level of training and equipment for their team that gives their customers peace of mind.
What did pupils learn?
That there are various skills required to work at Highland Motors such as: panel beating, mechanics, diagnostic technicians, sales, marketing, administration and strong customer service skills for reception work.
As well as informative, the visit was also kept interactive as Mr Smith brought along some diagnostic tools used for repair and damage detection so that pupils could see how these instruments are used in practice.
Get a job. Get paid. Get qualified.
In a world where job security is scarce, learning a skilled trade can give you that extra security to fall back on. Mr Stephen further explained the benefits of learning a skilled trade and how as an apprentice you get the opportunity of learning and earning at the same time in a real-world environment that puts your skills to the test right away.
A Follow Up Visit
School sector talks such as these are fantastic for employer and pupil interaction but follow up industry tours are also effective, so that students can see the work in action to generate further interest in working within various industries. Therefore, plans are underway for pupils to get the opportunity to visit this thriving local business.
A massive thanks goes to Mr Smith from Highland Motors for coming to speak at the school!
