Who are BSW?

BSW markets itself as being proudly the UK’s largest fully integrated forestry company. From managing the forests that will be used for social and physical activities for decades to come, to harvesting sustainable trees planted for felling years previously.

Their wide range of products are manufactured for construction, fencing, landscaping, agriculture, pallets and packaging uses. Their thousands of customers in the UK and abroad range from national suppliers such as Jewson and Travis Perkins to local independent retailers. They utilise 95% home grown timber with a great deal of this natural sustainable resource coming from the forests of the Highlands and Islands. Their aim to be a good neighbour in all the communities they work in. BSW has a major financial impact on every community in which they operate in. In return, they aim to create a positive impact in terms of taking on the very best local trained people and building careers for developing young people at the most technologically advanced forest manufacturing site in the UK, which happens to be in Lochaber.

So, what makes BSW stand out in the West Highlands?

Links with local schools

BSW actively attend school and college events to initiate contact with young people, promoting jobs and careers. Activities have included building bird boxes, to taking learning tours around their manufacturing sites for teachers and young people alike.  In return, this has helped them build further public awareness of local young peoples’ opportunities.

What else do they offer to young people?

Exciting summer job opportunities to both school leavers and graduates to enable them hands on work experience, which is key to any job they apply for.

Apprenticeship / Graduate Opportunities

They work closely with the local colleges to ensure they get the very best out of young people joining the company. Their interview process for apprentices even includes a tour of the college campus. They are also currently developing a new apprenticeship with Inverness College in Engineering Saw Doctoring. This could open doors to an array of new exciting job opportunities within BSW.

Their apprentice and graduate trainees do not just learn core skills for their roles, but also build on personal attributes such as team working, communication, leadership and management traits which are key for them in work, and their personal life also.

When apprentices complete their training programme, they become mentors and advisors when taking on new recruits. This helps existing employees build up their personnel management skills.

BSW feel that by communicating through their young ambassadors that this offers an engaging unique way of building brand perception which leads to retention, increased profits and a myriad of added value benefits.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

They are currently working with Skills Development Scotland to create a STEM ambassador for young females wishing to enter the world of IT and engineering.

Words of appreciation!

Local teachers, pupils and Skills Development Scotland have been enthusiastic in their praise for BSW, and are grateful to the extent that BSW go to make the West Highlands a better place to live, work and learn.
