Written by Mairi Sandison, Marketing Administrator, Ferguson Transport & Shipping

Ferguson Transport & Shipping, a Lochaber based Logistics Company; with its head office in Corpach continues to focus on recruiting young people from the local area. Ferguson Transport, in recent years has grown to proudly become one of the largest independent logistic companies in the Highlands & Islands with operating centres throughout the UK.

The company has recently taken on a further two apprentices in addition to those who are already in year three of their studies. At the start of last year, Lewis Cameron joined the company as an Apprentice Marine Engineer and HGV Mechanic Apprentice; Matthew Weir is now part way through the first year of his apprenticeship.

Michael Murphy and Calum MacDonald are already nearing completion of their training to become fully qualified HGV mechanics. They are following in the footsteps of Sean McColl and Cameron Blackmore who are both employed as qualified HGV mechanics, having completed their apprenticeships with us.

Ferguson Transport, as well as operating over 70 modern and commercial HGV Vehicles and 170+ trailers, has a maintenance depot based in Corpach. The premises cover vehicle maintenance and inspection operations in-house.  Apprentices within the company learn on the job with experienced and qualified employees teaching them the ways of the industry from the ground up, with block release at college and ongoing assessments throughout their training.

The company also offers business administration and office apprenticeships ensuring that young people within the local area are offered opportunities that open the door to a successful and rewarding career within the logistics industry. Ferguson Transport & Shipping have also offered various positions to recent graduates within the company giving the opportunity for young people to return to the local area with skills acquired to thrive in an ever growing and ever evolving local company.

“This will allow Robert the opportunity to learn and study in Kishorn where the lack of jobs for young people can force them to move further afield.”

There are currently a variety of trainee business administration apprenticeships throughout the business.  Carhie MacKinnon – a third generation family member – has recently started a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration and Robert MacInnes is also due to start the same course in the coming months based in our Kishorn office.  This will allow Robert the opportunity to learn and study in Kishorn where the lack of jobs for young people can force them to move further afield. We also have Danielle MacEachan our HR administrator currently studying towards her CIPD Certificate in HR Practice in addition to receiving on the job experience and mentoring in our HR department.

Ferguson Transport also offers career opportunities within their operating depots for HGV Drivers.   Opportunities are available in locations such as Corpach, Mallaig, Kyle, Kishorn, Inverness, Invergordon, Grangemouth and Carlisle. This further emphasises the companies’ growth strategy and key focus on a nationally operating company with a distinctly local based focus.

Ferguson Transport & Shipping are also committed to progressing individuals throughout the company. Emma Robertson has recently joined the companies HR team, having recently graduated from university she started in our reception team towards the end of last year and has now moved from the reception department to HR which is an area she has always had a keen interest in. Gillian Cameron has also recently gone from our reception department to our SHEQ department, which again she has always had a keen interest in and is looking forward to this challenging and varied role.

“As a company we see the benefit of promoting young people throughout the various areas of our business providing secure career paths for young professionals.”
