Marine Harvest Scoop the Regional Developing
the Young Workforce Award!
Congratulations to Marine Harvest on receiving recognition for the fantastic work that they do with young people throughout the Highlands and Islands. The 2017 Highland Business Awards, which aims to recognise and celebrate the achievements of companies and individuals across the whole region, were presented at a ceremony on Friday 29th September at the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness. Up against a lot of stiff competition in the West Highlands, Marine Harvest successfully bagged three awards: ‘DYW Regional Winner’, ‘Exporter of the Year’ and ‘Highland Business of the Year’. We would also like to take our hats off to the high calibre of applicants for this award, and to applaud BSW for their accolade for the ‘Highly Commended DYW West Highland Award’.
What do Marine Harvest do?
Marine Harvest dominate the aquaculture industry and are the largest producer of farmed salmon in the country, producing more than 45,000 tonnes in 2016. They operate four hatcheries, five freshwater loch sites and 46 sea farms spread across the western Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They employ over 700 people at these farms, as well as their harvesting station in Mallaig and their processing plant in Fort William. They will also be opening a new plant, which is due to be opened next autumn in Kyleakin, which will supply fish feed to all their farms in Scotland, as well as Ireland, the Faroe Islands and Norway. This development will create 55 full-time jobs at the plant and recruitment is already underway.
So, what made Marine Harvest stand out from an excellent crowd for DYW?
With almost 20% of the staff at Marine Harvest under 25, they aim to help keep talented young people in the Highlands and Islands and develop a workforce which will continue the success of the aquaculture industry in the future.
Investors in Young People accredited
It’s not much of a surprise that they were awarded Investors in Young People accreditation back in 2015. It’s clear to see how they have reaped the benefits of this accreditation by using it as a tool to attract new young recruits, boost staff retention and enhance social capital and responsibility.
Almost 30 employees with longer than 30 years’ service and one who recently celebrated his 40th work anniversary. Whilst this alone speaks volumes, they recognise that when highly valued skilled people leave the business it is vital that they recruit young people to take their place and help them to develop the same skills and depth of knowledge that will enable the industry to keep growing.
In their modern apprenticeship scheme each apprentice has a mentor, usually the head of the relevant department, who takes a hands-on role in developing the young person’s career and is responsible for introducing them to other members of staff, ensuring they are made to feel welcome and helping them get to know more about the company. All their young new recruits are trained up on site by farm managers and assistant farm managers who have themselves been fully trained to manage staff training and development. Five of their modern apprentices are now in a management position within the company.
